Your photo
When you run an identification, your photo is resized in your browser, sent to our server, and passed on to our AI provider, Groq, which runs the model that identifies it. The answer comes back to your browser.
We do not save your photo. Our server does not write it to disk, keep a copy, or log it, and we have no way to see it afterwards. Groq processes it under its own privacy policy.
Because of this, if you want us to look at an identification that went wrong, you will need to send the photo again by email.
Location
Adding a location is optional. If you type one, that text is sent to Groq with your photo to help narrow the result to species found where you are.
If you press the location button instead, your browser asks your permission first. With it, your coordinates are sent from your browser to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to turn them into a place name, under the OpenStreetMap Foundation privacy policy. Only the place name — or, if that fails, the coordinates rounded to about a hundred meters — goes on to Groq. We do not store it.
Surroundings
If you choose where you found it — indoors, garden, forest and so on — that choice is sent to Groq with the photo. It is not stored.
Cookies and storage
The site sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. There are no accounts and nothing to sign in to.
Analytics
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page visits. It does not use cookies and does not identify individual visitors; it reports totals such as how many people viewed a page and which country they were in.
The identification tool can also record that an identification was started, finished or failed, along with which tool was used — bug, spider, bite or plant. Nothing about your photo, your location or you is included.
Hosting
The site is hosted by Vercel. As with any website, Vercel's servers receive standard technical information when you visit, such as your IP address and browser type, to deliver the page and protect the service. See the Vercel privacy policy.
Our fonts and images are served from our own site, so loading a page does not contact Google Fonts or any other third party.
Advertising
There is no advertising on the site and no advertising trackers. If that changes, this policy will change first.
Children
The site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them. Since we store nothing about any visitor, there is nothing held that could be about a child.
Changes and contact
If what we collect changes, this page will say so and the date at the bottom of it will move. Questions go to hello@bugidentifier.net.
