In everyday speech, "bug" covers anything small that crawls. For identification it pays to be precise, because placing your creature in one group instantly rules out roughly three-quarters of the possibilities.

There's a real distinction hiding in there that trips people up: every true bug is an insect, but most insects are not "true bugs." A true bug belongs to the order Hemiptera — the group with piercing-sucking mouthparts and half-leathery forewings called hemelytra. A beetle or a bee is an insect but not a true bug. And spiders, ticks and mites aren't insects at all.
So count the legs first. Eight legs means you want the Spider tab on the identifier above. Six legs with visible antennae is an insect — the Bug tab handles it.

Six means an insect, eight means an arachnid, many means a centipede or millipede. This single count rules out most of the field.
Round, long, flat, segmented, pear-shaped or globular. Flat bodies suggest something that lives in cracks; globular ones often mean a spider's abdomen.

Honest answer: accuracy depends far more on your photo than on any marketing number. A sharp, well-lit, close-up shot of a common adult species on a plain background gets a strong result. A blurry photo of a larva against busy leaves does not.
Immature stages are genuinely harder — caterpillars, larvae and eggs carry fewer distinguishing features than adults, which is true even for trained entomologists. Some pairs are easy to confuse no matter how good the photo is: a varied carpet beetle mistaken for a bed bug nymph, a hoverfly mistaken for a yellowjacket, a crane fly mistaken for a giant mosquito.

Most insects are completely harmless. Of the few that can hurt people, the risk comes from one of three things.
Delivered by a sting or a bite. Among insects the practical concern is an allergic reaction to bee, wasp or hornet stings. Among spiders, only the black widow (shiny black, red hourglass underneath) and the brown recluse (violin marking, and only within its range) are medically significant in North America.
Mosquitoes (West Nile, Zika, dengue), certain ticks (Lyme, Rocky Mountain spotted fever) and kissing bugs (Chagas) are the main vectors. Identification matters here because the species determines the risk, not the bite itself.
Termites, carpenter ants and carpenter bees attack wood; pantry moths and weevils ruin stored food. Nothing here threatens you directly, but catching it early is the difference between a nuisance and a repair bill.
Here's the catch that makes identification worth doing: a lot of alarming bugs are harmless mimics. Hoverflies copy wasps, clearwing moths copy bees, and crane flies look like giant mosquitoes but don't bite at all. This is Batesian mimicry — a harmless species wearing the warning colors of a dangerous one. The reverse also exists: aposematic coloring, where a genuinely toxic insect such as a monarch advertises the fact in orange and black. Color alone can't tell them apart. Body shape and proportion can, which is exactly what a photo identifier reads.
